Classic International Harvester tractors like the IH 400 had down pressure on the "fast hitch". Better yet, they had both tilt and down pressure on the hitch. We used to use the hitch plate to "dig" rocks out of the fields: if you could get purchase for that hitch plate under a lip or surface of a rock, you could push, tilt, and lift some amazingly large stones up to where you could then push them around with the loader.

Got verification from a JD dealer that the new 4000 series front axles are in production. I don't know all the models affected, but we were talking specifically about 4300 and 4400. I don't know when production started but JD DTAC (Dealer Technical Assistance Center) is sending him info about which serial numbers forward have the new axle. To any JD dealers or reps that might read this: is it possible to obtain and post these serial numbers? Anybody hear any more about replacement axles for affected machines? (I started a new thread on this topic because I was afraid of crashing my pc or the telephone network with the length of the previous one.)

Joe, put me in the same boat with Dennis. Started 6 months ago absolutely in love with the Kubota 2710, decided it was too lightweight, seriously considered the JD 4200 and NH TC25D, then decided I really wanted more hp and weight, seriously considered the Kubota L3410 and JD 4300, ended up cutting a deal this morning on a JD 4400 HST 4WD with 430 loader and 48 backhoe. I'm comfortable now that I'm buying the best machine for me. The best advice is what is repeated on this board all the time: consider YOUR needs and uses carefully, study the choices, then drive the different models to see what YOU are most comfortable with. I'm convinced that you can't make a poor choice between JD, Kubota, and NH in terms of the machines and the manufacturer's commitment to the market. It comes down to what is best for you.

BTW, Steve and jt, regarding the original subject of this post before I helped send it off into loader and backhoe space: JD dealers here in northern NY seem to have a fair supply of 4400 HST's the last few weeks. I was surprised to see that you guys are looking at significant waits.

Great thread! I would normally be reluctant to post personal information on a public forum, but you all have paved the way and it is very interesting to get to know you all a little better. I live near Albany NY, work in New Jersey 3 hours away, and much like Kim H. earlier, I own 32 acres in the Adirondack Mountains of NY State, which, if you don't know, is the polar opposite of NY City. I'm a country boy at heart who is is trying to return to "the farm" after 30 years. My wife and I bought this land 2 years ago with the intent of building a second home (Kim: fancy camp) to which we could eventually retire and I could operate a small tree farm. This past summer the construction crew (a retired uncle and his cousin) finished the excavation, foundation, framing, roof, siding, windows, and exterior doors so that we could button it up for the winter. Hopefully this year we can complete the interior and infrastructure systems (still have to run electricity about a half-mile). The land was last farmed about 40 years ago; it is now about 6 acres overgrown meadow/field and the remainder old pasture that is now second-growth forest of white birch, beech, maple, balsam, poplar, cedar, and a small spruce plantation. I haven't bought a tractor yet, but have been obsessed (my wife's term) with this purchase for 6 months now. After extensive research and weighing my potential needs, I expect to buy a JD 4300/4400 with 430 loader/toothbar and 48 backhoe this spring. Initial uses will be construction work (water line and utility ditches, driveway, retaining walls, etc.), rock and stump removal to reclaim the meadow, and trail building to access the woods. In the future I plan to buy a PTO timber winch for selective tree harvesting and maybe a chipper at some point. My big decision still is do I buy with Ag tires and then eventually buy a "lawn tractor" to mow planned 1.5 acre "lawn" or do I buy with turf tires and chains and eventually buy a 60" belly mower for my wife to mow the lawn. Are the turfs tough enough for the woods? Well, that's a different thread...

Nobody is like Carver! (How many tractor web sites play music for you?) But for JD prices and some info www.jdlawns.com is a good reference point. Also the JD site itself (www.deere.com) has more specs. Other suggestions out there?

Megan, click on the Carver equipment link to get a lot more info on the B21 and prices for a new one for comparison. I have spent many hours on a B20 and can tell you that for backhoe and loader use it is incredible what it can do. I do think it would hold up much better for commercial loader/backhoe work than larger hp tractors that are really designed for more general purposes. Most of the rental yards around me rent out B20/B21's for exactly that reason. I think $19K is a reasonable asking price for machine with only 207 hours. Can you tell how well it has been maintained? Fluid and filter changes? That would be important to me. If it has been treated well, it seems a decent deal if you could save 20-25% the cost of a new machine.
